The Orville Season 2 Release Date Is Revealed by FOX

The Orville

On November 2, 2017, FOX officially confirmed that its new sci-fi television series created by and starring Seth MacFarlane will return for another round. The release date for Season 2 is scheduled for December 30, 2018 on FOX. During the TCA winter press tour, MacFarlane proclaimed that there would be more than twelve episodes in the next installment of The Orville.

He has emphasized thereby that it could take more time to produce these additional episodes for Season 2. However, it's worth noting that MacFarlane is about to create more "content-wise" episodes but reduce their amount less than twenty-two. He has also mentioned that his show is "effects-heavy" and, therefore, it's a long-term process to produce each particular episode.

In other words, we had to treat his statement as that Orville won't return for Season 2 earlier than next year. But later, on January 7, 2018, Seth MacFarlane announced on his official Twitter page that Orville is returning for Season 2 later this year. However, there won't be Orville/Family Guy crossover, according to his words, unfortunately. Finally, it become clear that the upcoming season is slated for this December.

Also worth noting that many people doubted that The Orville has a chance for another round, at all, since critics have negatively met the series. But the viewers, in turn, were entirely satisfied. On Rotten Tomatoes, the 1st installment of The Orville holds a score of 5.06/10 and a 21% approval rating from critics, while the viewers have evaluated the current season of the sci-fi series at 4.6/5/93%. We oversee almost the same statistics on Metacritic, 36/100 and 8.2/10, among critics/viewers, respectively. It looks curious, but critics and viewers had opposite opinions about this show. Nonetheless, FOX has likely taken into account only the reception by the target audience.

Besides, the ratings of The Orville were above praise during the show's premiere. However, the viewership decreased significantly by the end of the season. The Pilot has garnered 8.558 million viewers with a 2.73 key demo among adults (P18-49). But the season finale has gained only 3.538 million viewers with a 0.89 demo rating. Nonetheless, FOX has considered such statistics impressive enough. Therefore, the network has opted to pick up The Orville for another installment.
