As usual, we first look at the source of the television adaptation. In the case of Taboo Tattoo, we are talking about a seinen manga. The original manga consists of thirteen volumes. We thereby doubt that the show's creators managed to adapt all the chapters in a 12-episode season, isn't it? As a result, there remained enough source material for another television adaptation of the manga. The recent thirteen volume was issued on August 23, 2017, in Japan, while in the US, only the eighth book is available at the moment.
Let's take a look now at the BD/DVD sales of the series. In Japan, about 370 items were sold per week. Undoubtedly, this figure looks low. Nevertheless, it is not so bad as it may seem. However, it will be fair to note that this number is ten times less compared with Mob Psycho 100 for instance. So, we admit that the sales were weak. On the other hand, there are many anime series with the same amount of selling items which eventually got their next installments.
Another point we want to discuss is the studio, which served as a developer of the television adaptation. J.C.Staff, unlike many other Japanese studios, has the rule to renew some of their shows. We regard this parameter as another indicator affecting the renewal since there are plenty of Japanese studios that never pick up their shows for another round.
Finally, we want to pay your attention to a reception of the target audience. We evaluate it as quite average. Taboo Tattoo has a score of 6.01/10 on MyAnimeList based on about 55,300 votes. The viewers of Crunchyroll have rated this anime at just 2.3 out of 5 stars. However, on FUNimation, the show has a rating of 4.5/5. Although a response from the viewers appears to be controversial, we consider it very low for an anime series.
Summing up, we conclude that the odds of renewal are very low or even foggy. Taboo Tattoo has bad ratings, weak BD/DVD sales, as well as a questionable reputation among its fans. The only factor which plays in favor of the possible renewal is the ongoing manga of the same name. But, in spite of this, we doubt that Taboo Tattoo could return for Season 2. However, we don't rule out that this decision might happen someday at all.
Taboo Tattoo premiered in July 2016 on TV Tokyo. Later, AT-X, BS Japan, and other Japanese broadcasters began airing the series. J.C.Staff Co., Ltd. served as a developer of the television adaptation. FUNimation acted as a licensor of the anime in North America. The first season of Taboo Tattoo consisted of twelve episodes came to an end on September 19, 2016. Since then, there have been no official statements regarding Season 2.
