Soderbergh Says Mosaic Season 2 Is In Development, But No Details Are Available
This year, HBO released a brand new television product produced by Steven Soderbergh titled Mosaic. The show is initially conceived as a six-part interactive mini-series. Of course, most of you look forward to a continuation of the story. Fortunately, Soderbergh doesn't rule out a sequel. Moreover, in his exclusive interview with Vulture, the show's creator has stated that he is about to develop at least one more season, which will go a lot deeper. HBO has yet to confirm this statement. However, we may regard this announcement as unofficial confirmation of Mosaic Season 2. Let's take a look at some key indicators in an attempt to evaluate the odds of Mosaic to return for a next installment.
Few know, but Mosaic has garnered just 0.237 million viewers with a 0.03 key demo (P18-49) during its premiere. We don't consider these figures impressive, though they could be pretty satisfactory for HBO. Anyway, this is sad news since for the network it doesn't matter what Soderbergh thinks about the future of the series. For HBO, the show's commercial expediency plays the primary role, in our opinion. Thus, if to take this factor into account, it doesn't play in favor of renewal.
Let's pay now our attention to reception by critics and viewers. Critics have positively met the show. But as for the viewers, they have left the mixed reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the first season of Mosaic has a score of 8.03/10 with an 82% approval rating among critics. Meanwhile, the viewers have evaluated the drama series at 3.2/5/66%. We see the same picture on Metacritic, where the show has a score of 73/100 and 4.9/10 among critics/viewers, respectively. On IMDb, Mosaic has a rating of 6.7/10. Unfortunately, the show's reception doesn't look favorable. However, if this series was conceived to impress critics, Soderbergh apparently coped with this task.
In spite of such negative trend in the figures, HBO might give a chance to Soderbergh to film one more season. After all, if the director said that he is going to produce a sequel, he will have to. But we frankly doubt that another season might obtain success. However, we may be wrong. Summing up, we observe unfavorable conditions for the appearance of Mosaic Season 2 on HBO even despite the desire of the director to create a sophomore season. But we don't rule out the possibility of Season 2 at all. It's quite possible that HBO has their plans on account of Mosaic.
What Is Mosaic About?
If you have not watched this interactive series yet, here is a brief overview below.
Mosaic is a story of a mysterious murder with Sharon Stone, starring as a victim. The story focuses on the investigation of the death of Olivia Lake, a famous children's book author and illustrator that took place in a small resort town. The first season kicks off with a flashback four years before the main events, where Eric Neill, who now serves a sentence, tried of seducing Olivia. Petra, Eric's sister and all the rest start to revive in memory what precisely happened in the past.
The show has become the exciting experiment yet before its premiere. Having downloaded the interactive mobile app, the viewers could choose various variants of the storyline development, follow the protagonist of their interest, and impact thereby a finale of the series.
Concerning The Likely Release Date For Season 2
As mentioned above, we doubt that Mosaic Season 2 could happen someday. However, we don't rule out that HBO will eventually accept the offer of Soderbergh to produce a sequel. In that case, at least one year should pass before the next premiere. As a result, we tend to believe that the following season of Mosaic could take place in the first half of 2019. Of course, this assumption is just our forecast. We are still waiting for the official announcement from HBO. Be sure; we will update this page as soon as receiving some additional official info on the subject. As of now, stay tuned for updates. We will keep you informed.
