Another one astonishing sports anime apparently went on a journey towards a long-term hiatus. As it follows from the title of the recent movie, it was the last game. Kuroko's Basketball The Movie: Last Game premiered on March 18, 2017, and, as appears to serve as the final chapter of this story. But does the situation so much tragic? Perhaps, we still have to keep hoping for the fourth season of Kuroko's Basketball? In fact, there has been no official news on the subject. However, we could attempt to estimate the odds of the series to get one more season.
First of all, we should note that the original manga is fully complete. There is no additional source material for another television adaptation. It seems that all the seasons of Kuroko no Basket, numerous OVAs, as well as movies, caused the exhaustion of the franchise. As a result, all these adaptations have entirely covered up all the chapters of the story. And this is sad news, undoubtedly.
However, when the demand is high, there are two ways for any studio to satisfy the viewers. They could create one more season of the current series or film another one. The choice always remains on their side. After all, their final purpose is to squeeze out a maximum from the franchise. In our opinion, if the series is successful, they must do something to meet the demand.
Let's take a look at other indicators. Among them, we would like to emphasize a reception by the target audience. This factor looks excellent. According to the statistics by MAL, the first season of Kuroko's Basketball has a score of 8.40/10 > 255,600 votes. The second installment illustrates 8.53/10 ~ 200,000 votes, while the third one has a rating of 8.57/10 ~ 150,000 votes. All these figures indicate gradual growth of the total score of the series, and interest of the viewers thereby. The US show creators usually take this indicator into account in their decision of renewal or cancellation of the series. However, for the Japanese studios, this factor may mean nothing.
Another significant point affecting the decision on renewal is the box office of the franchise. On account of this matter, it looks kind of satisfactory, as for Kuroko no Basket. So for instance, the movie has grossed ¥250,000,000 (opening weekend) in Japan, a figure, which is equal to about $3,8 million. Unfortunately, we have no data for the international sales. But they should be great as well.
Summing up, there are many reasons to continue the franchise: a positive response from the target audience, impressive ratings, as well as excellent sales. Hence, the franchise looks commercially expedient. The viewers demand a new season. And we believe in the wisdom of the show's creators who don't want to lose the show's fandom. On the other hand, Production I.G doesn't have a fame of such a studio, which pick up its shows for the next season. All we can do is just keep hoping for their prudence.
Kuroko no Basket started off in April 2012 on MBS, and later aired on Tokyo MX, BS11 and Animax. Production I.G, Inc. served as a developer of the television adaptation. Crunchyroll has acquired rights to simulcast the anime in North America. The show currently counts seventy-five episodes. The last one concluded on June 30, 2015. The adaptation is inspired by the eponymous manga series by Tadatoshi Fujimaki. There has been no official statement concerning the fourth season of Kuroko's Basketball as of yet. What Is Kuroko no Basket About? The story focuses on a Japanese youth basketball team, which is famous for its "Generation of Miracles," a core consisting of five astonishing players. The team was a success within all the tournaments and won the most of them. However, over time, all five gifted players enrolled various high schools. But few know that among them there was the sixth player whose name and merit remained in the shadow, a phantom sixth man.
Meanwhile, Tetsuya Kuroko enrolls at Seirin High and enlists in the school's basketball club. Seirin is a new school, but its team managed to participate in a finale of the National Tournament. Another one newbie gets into the team simultaneously as well. His name is Taiga Kagami, and he is a promising player since he returned from the United States, a birthplace of basketball. The story, thereby follows the journey of Seirin's players through all the obstacles on the basketball court, in an attempt to become the best Japanese high school team.
On The Subject Of The Possible Release Date of Season 4In fact, it's difficult to say for sure whether or not Production I.G is going to produce one more season of Kuroko no Basket. However, despite a lack of source material, we still believe that the studio would like to meet the demand of the target audience. Therefore, in our opinion, Kuroko's Basketball Season 4 could happen someday.
As for the release date, the fourth season likely won't start even at the beginning of 2018 since the recent movie debuted in March. Most likely we will have to wait until 2019. However, the next fall appears to be a reasonable period for release as well. Anyway, the final decision will depend on the show's creators. Therefore, we are waiting for the official announcement. Stay tuned for updates. We'll keep you informed on the subject.
