Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist) Season 3: What We Know So Far

Even if Blue Exorcist Season 3 happen, we will have to wait. In fact, the 1st installment of Ao no Exorcist consisted of 24 episodes + an OVA, while the next anime adaptation included only twelve episodes. Therefore, generally speaking, we have already seen Blue Exorcist Season 3. Yet since Crunchyroll and other online video streamers opted to regard Blue Exorcist Season 1 & 2 as a full two-cour season + an OVA, we now expecting a 3rd season.
On the one hand, Blue Exorcist Season 2 made the things clear since it restored the order and brought us back to where the manga was. On the other, the anime apparently went on a long-term hiatus like it was at the first time.
Ao no Exorcist is based a manga series of the same name, and, by the way, the manga is still ongoing. The 22nd volume was issued on November 2, 2018. We now thereby have more than enough source material for at least another 12-episode anime adaptation. Yet the gap between the previous two installments was about six years! Whether we are ready to wait so long?
Meanwhile, many positive factors play in favor of Season 3, such as the BD/DVD sales that were quite impressive. Many refused to believe that the Blue Exorcist might be so commercially successful. And yet, in 2017, Ao no Exorcist took the 2nd place among all the rivals, with more than 1,120 BD and about 708 DVD items sold per week.
Besides, according to MyAnimeList, both television adaptations of Ao no Exorcist were a success overseas. The first season of the anime holds a score of 7.80/10 > 580,000 votes, while the 2nd round counted about 7.65/10 based on ~ 153,000 votes.
Summing up, Blue Exorcist has a good chance to return to the small screens since all indications point out the further decision on renewal. The only question remained unsolved, when will Blue Exorcist (Ao no Exorcist) Season 3 release date?
Blue Exorcist Season 3 Release Date
Ao no Exorcist Season 3 release date is yet to be announced. At least we didn't manage to find any confirmation of renewal in all the possible reliable sources. So, the A-1 Pictures studio has yet to announce a Season 3, and this is for sure. Yet we nevertheless might discuss the subject a little bit.
In the worst case scenario, we will have to wait for more six tedious years. We doubt that any of you is ready to wait so long. However, given the fact that at least two volumes of manga were issued right after the Season 2 finale, the franchise doesn't seem to be dead, and we thereby still have a chance for Season 3 in the foreseeable future.
Since there is enough source material for Blue Exorcist Season 3, we might expect the premiere someday in January 2020, in the best case scenario. Otherwise, Ao no Exorcist Season 3 might be scheduled on April 2020, according to the schedule of the two previous seasons. In any case, all we can is just waiting for the official announcement. Fortunately, we are tracking down the official sources, in order to inform you about the renewal as soon as possible. Stay tuned for updates.
What Do We Expect In Blue Exorcist Season 3
Let's think a little on the subject what to expect from the upcoming season. In order not to be unfounded, we'll use some borrowings from the original manga. That could help us to orient ourselves in the possible future storyline.
According to the manga, the third season of Blue Exorcist will focus on a conspired group of the Illuminati. But don't mislead yourself by taking them for the secret group of secret societies well-known to us. In this case, we're talking about the most powerful demons led by the King of Light.
Their primary mission is to resurrect Satan. Aside from this, they also work to flood the world with the hordes of zombies and other demon-like beings. As you may have guessed, Saburota Todou is a member of this organization.
Season 3 picks up with the invention of Gehenna Gate, a portal between the two worlds. The Illuminati constructed this gate in the territory of the former Russian nuclear plant. However, they weren't able to force the engine to work properly.
The Exorcists had a chance to prevent the portal launch. However, they've lost this opportunity. The demons state that Assiah and Gehenna were previously a single world. Therefore, the Illuminati is going to unite two worlds into a single whole once again. To accomplish this idea, they undertake various experiments.
